Six days, six skies

The game is divided into six days, each with its own weather and light: a soft morning, a bright clear day, a dusty windy afternoon, a thunderstorm, heavy rain, and the desert at night. As the days pass the herd grows from five animals to forty, and the search spreads further across red canyons, an oasis, a mountain lake and the tower you must unlock. Every stage has its own fog, sound and atmosphere, so the last night feels nothing like the first morning.

The animals

Forty desert creatures are hiding out there — camels, goats, llamas, alpacas and donkeys, along with coyotes, wolves, hyenas and jackals, ostriches and emus, meerkats, armadillos, hedgehogs and tortoises, geckos, iguanas and chameleons, gazelles, antelopes, jackrabbits, squirrels and more. Each one follows at your side once you catch it, and runs when you run.

Gameplay loop

Walk up to an animal and press E to take it; it trots along beside you. Press Q to whistle, and every animal close enough answers out loud and flashes on the minimap, so you can track down the ones you cannot see. Lead your herd in through the farm gate — they will not climb the fence — and when the last animal is home, a golden key appears on the stone platform at camp.

Take the key, climb the red bridge up the mountain, row the little boat across the lake, and unlock the tower at its centre. Open the door and the day resets: a new sky, more animals, scattered further out. Do it six times to finish the game.

How to play Big Walk

On a computer, walk with W A S D or the arrow keys, hold Shift to run, and hold a mouse button and drag to look around. Space jumps, E takes an animal or opens the tower door, Q whistles, and Esc opens the settings.

On a phone or tablet, drag your left thumb anywhere on the left of the screen to walk and your right thumb to turn the camera. The RUN, JUMP, E and whistle buttons sit in the bottom-right corner, and the cog button opens sound settings. Big Walk works in both portrait and landscape.

Tips for finding every animal

Whistle often — it is the fastest way to find an animal you cannot see. Animals beyond the edge of the minimap appear as arrows on its rim, pointing the way, so nothing is ever truly lost. You can bring several animals at once, and they will only enter the pen through the gate, so lead them round to the front. The tower door stays locked until the last animal is home.
