Six days, six skies

The game runs across six days, and no two look alike. A soft golden morning gives way to a bright clear noon, then a dusty windy afternoon, a black thunderstorm, driving rain, and finally the desert under moonlight. Each day carries its own light, fog, wind and sound, and the mood shifts with them — the open, easy first morning feels nothing like the last night, when the fog closes in and the herd is scattered to the far edges of the map.

A herd of forty

Forty desert creatures are hiding out in the sand. Camels, goats, llamas, alpacas and donkeys graze near the trails, while coyotes, wolves, hyenas and jackals keep to the rocks. Ostriches and emus stalk the open flats; meerkats, armadillos, hedgehogs and tortoises hide in the scrub; geckos, iguanas and chameleons bask on the stone. Gazelles, antelopes, jackrabbits and squirrels bolt at the first sign of company. The first day asks for five of them. The last asks for forty.

The desert and the tower

Beyond the camp the land opens into red canyons, dry washes, an acacia grove, a stone field, an oasis and far dunes, each linked by worn trails. Rising above all of it is a mountain with a lake on its summit and a lone tower standing on an island at its centre. A red bridge climbs the mountainside, a small wooden boat waits at the shore, and the tower door stays shut until the day's work is done. Opening it ends the day — and begins the next one, under a different sky.

Mood and style

Big Walk is unhurried. There are no enemies, no timers and no failure state; the pleasure is in the walking, the searching, and watching a growing line of animals trail along at your heels across the sand. The art is soft and cartoon-bright, the sound is wind, hooves and distant thunder, and the whole thing runs in a browser with no download and no account, on desktop, tablet or phone alike.
